LAX to Santa Monica, Hollywood & DTLA: Pickup Guide

Getting from LAX to Santa Monica, Hollywood or Downtown LA starts with one question: where does your ride pick you up? Taxis and app-based rideshare at LAX do not load at the terminal curb; they use the LAX-it lot east of Terminal 1, reached on foot or by a free shuttle. A pre-booked LAX airport transfer works differently: your driver tracks your flight and meets you at the meeting point in your confirmation, with a fixed price agreed in advance.

This guide explains how pickups work at LAX, compares your options for the three most popular destinations, and gives you a checklist for a smooth arrival. For hotels, neighborhoods and the other airports we serve in Southern California, see our Los Angeles airport transfer guide.

How pickups work at LAX

LAX is a horseshoe of terminals around a single loop road, World Way, with an Upper/Departures Level and a Lower/Arrivals Level. To reduce congestion on that loop, the airport moved taxi and rideshare pickups off the terminal curbs to a dedicated lot called LAX-it (pronounced “LA Exit”).

What LAX-it is

  • Location: just east of Terminal 1, at the corner of World Way and Sky Way.
  • Who uses it: taxis and app-based rides such as Uber, Lyft and Opoli.
  • How to get there: walk from the nearby terminals or take the free LAX-it shuttle, which runs in a dedicated lane on the Lower/Arrivals Level; look for the green LAX-it signs.
  • Facilities: restrooms, seating, shade, Wi-Fi and staff managing the lanes.

Drop-offs still happen at the terminal curbs on the Upper/Departures Level. The arrangement is tied to LAX’s long-running modernization program, including an automated people mover, so details can change as new facilities open. Check the airport’s website shortly before you travel.

What this means after a long flight

With a taxi or rideshare, the sequence is: collect your bags, find the green shuttle stop, ride to LAX-it, then join the taxi line or find your app pickup zone and wait for a driver. It works, but with children, strollers or several suitcases it adds steps at the moment you are most tired.

Public transport from LAX

FlyAway bus

The FlyAway is a non-stop bus between LAX and two points: Union Station in Downtown LA and Van Nuys in the San Fernando Valley. It is good value if your hotel is near Union Station, but it does not serve Santa Monica or Hollywood directly.

Metro rail

A free shuttle runs from the terminals’ Lower/Arrivals Level to the LAX/Metro Transit Center, served by the Metro C and K Lines. From there, reaching Santa Monica, Hollywood or Downtown involves at least one more transfer. Rail is the cheapest choice, but it is a long trip with luggage and is best for travelers with a backpack or carry-on.

Destination guide

LAX to Santa Monica

Santa Monica is north of the airport along the coast, and it is one of the shorter trips from LAX by road. Because it is close, a taxi or rideshare can seem like the obvious choice, but you still go through LAX-it first. A pre-booked car means you walk out of baggage claim to a driver who already knows your landing time, which many visitors heading to beachfront hotels prefer.

LAX to Hollywood

Hollywood is further inland and north, and the drive usually involves surface streets and the freeway network that is prone to congestion at peak times. A fixed price is useful here because the duration varies so much with traffic.

LAX to Downtown LA

Downtown LA is about 16 miles from LAX, according to the city’s official tourism board. The FlyAway to Union Station is a reasonable choice for hotels nearby. For hotels elsewhere downtown, or arrivals in rush hour, a car directly to your door saves a second leg.

How a pre-booked LAX airport transfer works

Booking ahead takes the uncertainty out of an LAX pickup. With our service:

  • You see a fixed price in US dollars before you book, including tolls and the airport fee.
  • Your driver tracks your flight and adjusts pickup to your actual landing time.
  • You receive the driver’s name and phone number before you land.
  • The driver meets you at the terminal meeting point given in your confirmation, so you are not guessing where to go.
  • Rides are operated by licensed, insured local car service companies we work with.

Pick the right vehicle

A Sedan carries up to 3 passengers and 3 bags, a Minivan up to 6 passengers and 6 bags, and a Sprinter Van up to 14 passengers, which suits film crews, sports teams and wedding parties. Child seats are available on request.

LAX arrival checklist

  • Know your terminal number; LAX has many, spread around one loop.
  • Decide your ride before you land: LAX-it for taxis and rideshare, or the meeting point in your car service confirmation.
  • If you use LAX-it, follow the green signs to the shuttle on the Lower/Arrivals Level.
  • If you take Metro, look for the free shuttle to the LAX/Metro Transit Center.
  • Keep your phone charged to receive your driver’s details.
  • Allow extra time after landing for customs on international flights.
  • Request child seats at booking if you are traveling with young children.
  • Check the LAX website for any changes to pickup locations during construction.

Plans change, and our bookings can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before pickup, local time at the pickup. Read the full refund and cancellation policy. Your card is authorized at booking and charged 24 hours before pickup. For more Southern California routes, visit our LAX and Los Angeles transfers page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Uber or a taxi pick me up at the LAX terminal curb?

Generally, no. Taxis and app-based rides such as Uber and Lyft pick up at the LAX-it lot, just east of Terminal 1 at World Way and Sky Way. You can walk there from nearby terminals or take the free LAX-it shuttle from the Lower/Arrivals Level. Drop-offs still happen at the terminal curbs on the Upper/Departures Level.

Where will my pre-booked driver meet me at LAX?

Your driver meets you at the terminal meeting point stated in your booking confirmation. Read it before you land so you know exactly where to go after baggage claim. You also receive the driver’s name and phone number before landing, so you can call or message if you cannot find each other.

Is there a train from LAX to Santa Monica?

There is no direct train. A free shuttle runs from the terminals to the LAX/Metro Transit Center, which is served by the Metro C and K Lines. Reaching Santa Monica from there requires at least one transfer. It is the cheapest option, but it is slow with luggage, so it suits travelers with only a carry-on.

Does the FlyAway bus go to Hollywood or Santa Monica?

No. The FlyAway runs non-stop between LAX and Union Station in Downtown LA, and between LAX and Van Nuys. It is convenient if you are staying near Union Station. For Hollywood or Santa Monica you would need onward transport from Union Station, such as Metro rail, a taxi or a rideshare.

What if my flight into LAX lands early or late?

Your driver tracks your flight and adjusts the pickup to your actual landing time, so you do not need to rebook or call when the schedule changes. Time spent in immigration or waiting for bags comes after landing, so message your driver using the number sent before you land if you are delayed inside the terminal.

Which vehicle should I book for a family at LAX?

For up to 3 passengers with 3 bags, a Sedan works. Families with more luggage usually prefer a Minivan, which takes up to 6 passengers and 6 bags. Larger groups can book a Sprinter Van for up to 14 passengers. Child seats are available on request, so add them when you book.
