Getting from IAD to Washington, D.C.

Washington Flyer taxis serve Dulles exclusively, around the clock, from the lower level of the Main Terminal, and Uber and Lyft pick up on the arrivals level. The Silver Line Metrorail station connects to the terminal through an indoor tunnel with moving walkways, giving a direct rail ride into Washington, though the journey is long with luggage. Given the distance to the city, a pre-booked car is a practical choice for families, business travelers and anyone arriving on a late international flight.

Arrival tips

  1. After a long-haul flight, expect to clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection in the international arrivals area before exiting; we time the pickup to your actual landing.
  2. Gates in Concourses A to D are a train or mobile lounge ride from the Main Terminal, so allow a few extra minutes to reach baggage claim.
  3. Only take rides you booked. The airport authority warns against drivers offering service outside a pre-arranged reservation or ride app.
  4. Your confirmation gives the meeting point for the Main Terminal; message your driver when you have collected your bags.

IAD transfer questions

How long does the drive from Dulles to downtown Washington take?

Dulles is about 26 miles from downtown Washington, D.C., so it is the farthest of the region's main airports from the city center. The drive time depends on traffic on the Dulles Access Road, I-66 and the bridges into the District, and weekday peaks are slowest. Your price is fixed before you book, including tolls.

Where do international passengers exit at Dulles?

International passengers clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection, agriculture and immigration checks in the International Arrivals Building before entering the Main Terminal. Queue times vary with the number of flights landing together. We track your flight, and your confirmation gives the meeting point where your driver will wait.

Should I take Metrorail or a private car from Dulles?

The Silver Line station is connected to the terminal and reaches downtown Washington and many suburbs, which suits travelers with light bags. A private car goes directly to your hotel, home or office without transfers, which helps when you have luggage, children or an early-morning or late-evening arrival.

Can I book a large vehicle for a group arriving at Dulles?

Yes. A Sprinter Van carries up to 14 passengers, which suits delegations, tour groups and families traveling together. A Minivan carries 6 passengers with 6 bags, and a Sedan carries 3 with 3 bags. Every ride is operated by a licensed, insured local car service company.
