Newark Airport to Manhattan: EWR Transfer Guide

Updated 31 Oct 2026 By Airport Transfer USA Operations Team
Private airport transfer car and driver

The main ways to get from Newark Airport (EWR) to Manhattan are NJ Transit or Amtrak trains via the AirTrain, an express bus to Midtown, a taxi from the official stand, a rideshare app, or a pre-booked private car. The train is usually the quickest and cheapest for light travelers, while a taxi or private car takes you door to door through the Hudson River tunnels. If you have a family, heavy bags or a late arrival, a fixed-price car booked in advance removes most of the guesswork.

Newark Liberty International Airport is in New Jersey, which surprises many first-time visitors to New York. This guide explains every Newark Airport to Manhattan option, how each one is priced, and where each pickup happens. For all New York airports and neighborhoods, see our New York airport transfer hub.

Option 1: AirTrain Newark and the train

AirTrain Newark connects the terminals with Newark Liberty International Airport Station on the Northeast Corridor rail line. From there, NJ Transit (Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line) and Amtrak trains run to New York Penn Station in Midtown. The Port Authority puts the NJ Transit trip to Midtown at about 30 minutes, and an AirTrain fee applies on top of the train fare; the NJ Transit app sells tickets that include it.

Tips for the train

  • Buy your NJ Transit ticket in the app or at the machines before boarding; the airport says you pay the AirTrain fee at the station gates if you do not have a rail ticket.
  • Make sure the train is heading to New York, not south toward Trenton.
  • Penn Station is busy and has many exits; know which avenue you need before you arrive.
  • For Lower Manhattan, the airport also lists NJ Transit plus PATH routes to 33rd Street and the World Trade Center.

The train is excellent value and avoids tunnel traffic. It is less comfortable with large suitcases, strollers or children, and you still need to get from Penn Station to your hotel.

Option 2: Express bus to Midtown

An express bus operated by Coach USA stops at every terminal and runs to three Midtown stops: Grand Central Terminal, Bryant Park and the Port Authority Bus Terminal. The airport estimates the trip at about 50 minutes, but road traffic can make it longer. It suits travelers whose hotel is near one of those stops and who prefer not to change trains.

Option 3: Taxi from Newark Airport

Licensed taxis wait at official stands outside each terminal. Unlike JFK, there is no single flat fare to Manhattan. The Port Authority publishes estimated fares by Manhattan zone, rising the further uptown you go, and these estimates exclude tolls and tips.

Extras to expect

The Port Authority lists several possible additions to a taxi fare from Newark to New York, including:

  • An airport access fee on all trips
  • A rush-hour surcharge on trips into New York at peak times on weekdays and weekend afternoons
  • A surcharge for destinations on the East Side of Manhattan
  • MTA congestion pricing charges, which vary by time of day
  • A per-bag charge
  • Tunnel or bridge tolls, plus a tip

The airport advises taking your receipt from the taxi dispatcher before you leave, showing it to the driver, and keeping it. Because the final amount depends on so many variables, the taxi is the least predictable option on price.

Option 4: Rideshare apps at EWR

Uber and Lyft pick up at marked Ride App Pick Up areas. According to the airport, Terminal A riders go to the arrivals level across the street from the terminal, Terminal B riders use the arrivals level frontage, and Terminal C riders go to Floor 3 of the Terminal C Garage. Prices are set dynamically by the app, and you only request the car once you have your bags.

Option 5: Pre-booked private car service

A private car service is the closest thing to door-to-door certainty from Newark Airport to Manhattan. With us, you see a fixed price in US dollars before you book, and it already includes tolls and the airport fee. Tunnel tolls, surcharges and traffic do not change the amount.

What happens on arrival

  • Your driver tracks your flight and adjusts the pickup to your actual landing time.
  • You get the driver’s name and phone number before you land.
  • The driver meets you at the terminal meeting point given in your confirmation.
  • The ride is operated by a licensed, insured local car service company we work with.

  • Hotel near Grand Central or Bryant Park: the express bus is simple.
  • Family with children or lots of bags: a Minivan with child seats booked ahead.
  • Group or team travel: a Sprinter Van keeps everyone and the luggage together.
  • Late-night or delayed flight: a private car that tracks your flight rather than a taxi line.

Newark arrival checklist

  • Check your terminal (A, B or C); pickup points differ for each.

  • For a taxi, use only the official stand and keep your dispatcher receipt.
  • For a private car, read the meeting point in your confirmation before you land.

  • Book child seats in advance if you need them.

If your plans change, you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before pickup, local time at the pickup; see our refund and cancellation policy. How long is the train from Newark Airport to Manhattan?

The Port Authority estimates about 30 minutes on NJ Transit from the airport rail station to Midtown Manhattan, arriving at New York Penn Station.
