O’Hare to Downtown Chicago: Car, Blue Line and More
O’Hare International Airport is about 17 miles northwest of the Loop, and the two main ways to get from O’Hare to downtown Chicago are the CTA Blue Line train, which runs 24 hours a day, and a car along the Kennedy Expressway. A pre-booked private car is the easiest option with luggage, children or a group, while the Blue Line suits solo travelers who pack light.
This guide covers every realistic option, where each one picks up at O’Hare, and how to decide which is right for your arrival. For all our routes in the city, see our Chicago airport transfers page.
O’Hare Airport basics
O’Hare has four passenger terminals: Terminals 1, 2 and 3 in the core of the airport, and Terminal 5, which handles most international arrivals. A free Airport Transit System (ATS) train connects the terminals and the parking and rental car facilities.
If you are arriving on an international flight, allow time for immigration and customs at Terminal 5 before you reach the arrivals area.

Pre-booked private car
A car takes you from the terminal to your hotel or office door, which matters in a city where winter weather and luggage make walking from a train station unappealing. Drivers usually take the Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94) toward the Loop. The Kennedy is one of the busiest roads in the region, and journey times vary considerably with rush hour, weather and construction.
With a fixed-price car, the traffic affects your time, not your fare. Our prices are shown before you book in US dollars and include tolls and the airport fee. Here are our fixed fares from O’Hare to popular Chicago destinations:
| To (from ORD) | Sedan | Minivan |
|---|---|---|
| The Loop | $115 | $144 |
| Magnificent Mile | $112 | $140 |
| McCormick Place | $122 | $153 |
| Evanston | $109 | $137 |

Where you meet the driver at O’Hare
According to the Chicago Department of Aviation, pre-arranged livery vehicles meet passengers only in designated areas on the lower-level center lane, and some companies have drivers meet passengers in baggage claim. Black car pickups are offered on the lower level of all terminals.
With us, your driver meets you at the terminal meeting point given in your confirmation. The driver’s name and phone number are sent before landing, and the driver tracks your flight, adjusting the pickup to your actual landing time.
CTA Blue Line
The Chicago Transit Authority’s Blue Line starts at O’Hare and runs into the Loop, where it stops at Clark/Lake, Washington, Monroe and Jackson under Dearborn Street. According to the airport, the Blue Line offers 24-hour service, with more frequent trains during weekday morning and evening rush hours.
How to reach the Blue Line station
- The station is on the lower level of the main parking garage.
- From Terminals 1, 2 and 3, follow the “Trains to City” signs through the pedestrian tunnels on the basement level.
- From Terminal 5, take the ATS to Terminal 2 or 3 first, then follow the same signs.
- Fare machines are outside the station and accept cash and cards. Check the CTA website for the current fare from O’Hare.
Is the Blue Line right for you?
The train avoids expressway traffic, which is a real advantage at rush hour. The drawbacks are luggage and the last mile: many Loop stations involve stairs, and you still need to get from the station to your hotel. With several suitcases, small children or a late-night arrival in winter, a car is usually the more comfortable choice.
Taxi and rideshare
Taxi stands are at the lower-level curb outside baggage claim at every terminal. Chicago taxis are metered, so the fare depends on traffic. The airport advises using only the designated stands and not accepting rides from people offering them inside the terminal or on the departures level.
Rideshare pickups use designated zones; at Terminals 2 and 3 these are on the upper level, marked by numbered signs. Follow the airport signage and your app’s instructions.
Metra North Central Service
Metra’s North Central Service stops at the O’Hare Transfer station and runs to Union Station in the West Loop. To reach it, take the ATS to the Multi-Modal Facility. Service runs on weekdays only with a limited timetable, so it works only if your arrival fits the schedule.
