JFK to Manhattan: Taxi, Train, Rideshare or Private Car

There are four realistic ways to get from JFK to Manhattan: a yellow taxi at a flat fare, the AirTrain plus subway or LIRR, a rideshare app, or a pre-booked private car service. Rail is the cheapest and avoids road traffic, the taxi has a known base fare but extra surcharges, and a private car gives you a fixed price, a driver waiting for you and room for luggage. The right choice depends mostly on your bags, your group size and how much walking you want after a long flight.

This guide compares every option for the JFK to Manhattan trip, explains what each one really involves on arrival, and helps you decide in a couple of minutes. For an overview of airports, neighborhoods and routes, see our New York airport transfer guide.

JFK to Manhattan at a glance

John F. Kennedy International Airport sits in southeast Queens, and Midtown Manhattan is on the other side of the borough. Every road route crosses a bridge or tunnel and can be slowed by traffic on the Van Wyck Expressway, the Belt Parkway or the Long Island Expressway. Rail avoids the roads but involves at least one change.

Option How you pay Changes Best for
Yellow taxi Flat fare plus surcharges, tolls and tip None Travelers who do not mind a taxi line
AirTrain + subway AirTrain fare plus subway fare One or more Solo travelers with light bags
AirTrain + LIRR AirTrain fare plus LIRR ticket One Faster rail trip to Penn Station or Grand Central Madison
Rideshare app Dynamic price shown in the app None Travelers comfortable finding an app pickup zone
Private car service Fixed price agreed before you fly None Families, groups, business travelers, late arrivals

Option 1: Yellow taxi from JFK

Yellow taxis wait at official taxi stands outside the JFK terminals. Trips between JFK and Manhattan run on a flat fare set by the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) rather than the meter. At the time of writing that flat fare is $70, and it applies in either direction to anywhere in Manhattan.

What gets added to the flat fare

The flat fare is not the total. According to the TLC, you also pay:

  • An MTA State Surcharge and an Improvement Surcharge
  • A rush-hour surcharge on weekdays from 4 pm to 8 pm, excluding legal holidays
  • The New York State congestion surcharge for trips to Manhattan south of 96th Street
  • The MTA congestion pricing toll for trips into the zone at or below 60th Street
  • Bridge and tunnel tolls, plus a tip for the driver

The taxi is a solid option when the line is short. The downsides are that the line can be long at busy times, you need to fit into a standard cab with your luggage, and a family will need its own child seat because most taxis do not carry one.

Option 2: AirTrain plus subway or LIRR

AirTrain JFK links all terminals with two stations on the city rail network: Jamaica and Howard Beach. Riding between terminals is free; you pay when you enter or leave the system at Jamaica or Howard Beach. The official JFK site lists the AirTrain fare at $8.75 per ride at the time of writing, payable with a contactless card, phone or OMNY card, and children under five ride free.

AirTrain to Jamaica, then subway or LIRR

At Jamaica you can transfer to the E, J or Z subway lines at Sutphin Boulevard, or to the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). The LIRR runs to Penn Station and Grand Central Madison, and the airport says the rail leg from those Manhattan stations takes about 20 minutes. The subway is cheaper but slower, with many stops through Queens.

AirTrain to Howard Beach, then the A train

Howard Beach connects to the A line, which runs into Lower Manhattan and up the west side. It is a long ride, but it works well if your hotel is near an A train stop downtown.

Is rail right for you?

Rail is the cheapest way to get from JFK to Manhattan and is immune to traffic. It is harder with large suitcases, small children or a late-night arrival, and you still need to get from the Manhattan station to your hotel door, which often means a walk or a short taxi ride.

Option 3: Rideshare apps

Uber and Lyft operate at JFK, with pickups at designated areas that vary by terminal and can change as construction continues at the airport. Prices are dynamic: the app shows a quote when you request the ride, and it can rise sharply when many flights land at once or when weather disrupts the schedule. You request the car only after you have your bags, so expect to wait for a driver to be assigned and reach the pickup zone.

Rideshare can work well for a solo traveler who is used to the apps. It is less predictable for groups that need a larger vehicle or anyone who wants a firm price before boarding the plane.

Option 4: Pre-booked private car service

A private car service is booked before you travel, so the price and the vehicle are settled before you land. With our service, the fixed price is shown in US dollars before you book and already includes tolls and the airport fee, so there is nothing to calculate on arrival.

How a JFK pickup works with us

  • Your driver tracks your flight and adjusts the pickup to your actual landing time, so an early or late arrival is handled.
  • You receive the driver’s name and phone number before you land.
  • The driver meets you at the terminal meeting point given in your booking confirmation.
  • Rides are operated by licensed, insured local car service companies we work with.

Choosing a vehicle

A Sedan takes up to 3 passengers and 3 bags, a Minivan up to 6 passengers and 6 bags, and a Sprinter Van up to 14 passengers. Child seats are available on request, which matters for families because you do not have to carry your own through the airport.

Here are our current fixed fares from JFK to popular destinations:

Times Square17 mi$110$138

Which JFK to Manhattan option should you choose?

Use this quick rule of thumb:

  • Traveling solo with a carry-on and a tight budget: AirTrain plus subway or LIRR.
  • Arriving at a quiet time with no children: a yellow taxi from the official stand.
  • Traveling with family, lots of luggage or a group: a pre-booked Minivan or Sprinter Van.
  • Arriving late at night or on a tight business schedule: a private car that is already tracking your flight.

JFK arrival checklist

  • Note your terminal; JFK terminals are spread out and connected only by AirTrain.
  • Keep your phone charged and roaming or Wi-Fi ready to receive driver messages.
  • If you take a taxi, use only the official taxi stand and ignore anyone soliciting rides inside the terminal.
  • If you take the train, have a contactless card or phone ready for the AirTrain and subway gates.
  • For a private car, check the meeting point in your confirmation before you leave the plane.
  • Allow extra time for customs and immigration on international arrivals; flight tracking covers landing time, not the wait inside.
  • Request child seats when you book if you are traveling with small children.

Plans change, so it helps to know the rules: our bookings can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before pickup, local time at the pickup. The full terms are on our refund and cancellation policy page. Your card is authorized at booking and charged 24 hours before pickup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a flat taxi fare from JFK to Manhattan?

Yes. Yellow taxis between JFK and any Manhattan address charge a flat fare set by the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission instead of the meter. Surcharges are added on top, including the MTA and improvement surcharges, a weekday rush-hour surcharge, the state congestion surcharge and the congestion pricing toll where they apply, plus bridge or tunnel tolls and a tip for the driver.

What is the cheapest way to get from JFK to Manhattan?

The AirTrain to Jamaica or Howard Beach followed by the subway is the cheapest option. You pay the AirTrain fare when you exit at Jamaica or Howard Beach, then a standard subway fare. Both accept contactless cards and phones. It takes longer than the LIRR and involves stairs and crowded trains, so it suits travelers with light luggage.

Is the LIRR faster than the subway from JFK?

Usually, yes. From Jamaica, the Long Island Rail Road runs to Penn Station and Grand Central Madison with few stops, and the airport says that rail leg takes about 20 minutes. The subway makes many local stops through Queens. The LIRR costs more than the subway, and you still pay the AirTrain fare to reach Jamaica.

Does the private car price include tolls from JFK?

Yes. With our service the fixed price shown before you book includes tolls and the airport fee, and it is quoted in US dollars. The price depends on the vehicle you choose and your destination, not on traffic or the time it takes, so a slow drive into Manhattan does not change what you pay.

What happens if my flight into JFK is delayed?

Your driver tracks your flight and adjusts the pickup to your actual landing time, so you do not need to call to report a delay. You receive the driver’s name and phone number before you land. Keep in mind that customs, immigration and baggage claim happen after landing, so contact your driver if you are held up inside the terminal.

Can I get a car with child seats from JFK?

Yes. Child seats are available on request when you book, so you do not need to bring your own through the airport. Add them during booking and say how many you need. For larger families, a Minivan carries up to 6 passengers and 6 bags, and a Sprinter Van carries up to 14 passengers.
